History

Environmental Solutions & Services, Inc. was founded in 1995 by Paul Taylor and Ron Goerne in Savoy, IL.  Paul and Ron believed there was a niche for a company to provide solutions for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring, Duct Cleaning and Environmentally Sensitive Janitorial Service in Central Illinois.

After a couple of very difficult years and financial struggles, Ron left the company in 1997 and Paul took over.  The Duct Cleaning and the Indoor Air Quality Monitoring was a tough sell, but the janitorial services really began to take hold.  There was a need in Central Illinois for a professional, consistent, high-quality janitorial service.  Many customers saw the benefits of using environmentally favored cleaning products and methods to clean their facilities.  With a focus on workforce productivity, building owners and managers recognized the workplace health and productivity benefits of a sound cleaning service.

In 1999, ESS surpassed $1,000,000 in revenues and moved to a larger facility in Urbana, IL.  The operations portion of the business became more than Paul could handle on his own, so Terry Patton was hired as Operations Manager.  Jacob Shaw took over as Operations Manager in 2015.

The first few years in business were difficult in many ways.  Staying above water financially was always a concern as the company had accumulated a significant amount of debt.  After many years of financial struggles, ESS became 100% debt free in 2002.  “Operate Debt Free” is one of ESS’s Core Values, and ESS remains debt free today.

Geographic growth throughout Central Illinois has been a part of the company vision since day one.  In 2004, ESS opened a branch office in Effingham to better serve the South Central Illinois Region.  The Effingham Branch provides services in Effingham, Mattoon, Charleston, Paris, Newton, Arcola and other local towns.  Brittany Babbs is Branch Manager.

ESS grew to over 140 employees in 2005 and it became apparent that Paul could no longer handle all of the hiring and Human Resources duties.  Tammy Eckart was hired as Director of Human Resources to fill the gap.  Today, the Human Resources Team consists of Lorianne Bauer, HR & Safety Director, Julianna Huck, Director of Employment,  Kim Kopp and April Blair, HR Coordinators.  The HR Team does a great job of hiring for and maintaining a positive culture throughout the organization.

While ESS had no customers in Bloomington in 2007 it was apparent that Bloomington, IL was a vibrant, growing business community that could benefit from a high quality, professional Contract Cleaning Company.  ESS opened a Branch Office in Bloomington during the fall of 2007.  Kevin Copass was hired as Branch Manager.  Today, Kevin has over 75  people on his Team serving the Bloomington-Normal area.

In 2011, ESS opened a Branch Office in Decatur, IL, who is managed by Bob Monteith.  In 2018, ESS Clean expanded into Indianapolis with the acquisition of Crystal Clear Commercial Cleaning.  Pam Kregers was hired as Branch Manager.

The ESS Team has continued to provide the highest quality, most consistent contract cleaning service in Central Illinois.  As a result, revenues have increased every year since 1995, averaging 9% annual growth for the past 10 years, with a better than 95% customer retention rate.

In 2009, Environmental Solutions & Services, Inc. changed its name to ESS Clean, Inc., to reflect the primary purpose of the company.

Mike Alsmeyer
Mike AlsmeyerFirst Shift Supervisor
Mike joined the ESS team after 30 years in the restaurant and service industries. As First Shift Supervisor, he is responsible for supervision of day porters and 1st shift project work. When he is not at work, Mike enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife, Sherri, his stepdaughters, Heather and Brooke, and his four grandchildren. Mike also plays guitar and he enjoys grilling and bike riding.

Brittany Babbs
Brittany BabbsEffingham Branch Manager
Brittany is the Branch Manager for the Effingham & Mattoon areas. She has been with ESS Clean since February 2009. She started as a part-time cleaner and then moved to an Area Manager position in February 2010. In August of 2018, she was promoted to Assistant Branch Manager. Brittany is from Oblong, IL and loves spending time with her husband, Jeremy, two sons, Tucker and Bryar, and their dogs. Her other hobbies include fishing and playing/watching a variety of sports. Brittany has an Associate’s Degree from Lincoln Trail College in Science and Arts.

Lorianne Bauer
Lorianne BauerHR & Safety Director, SHRM-SCP, PHR
Lorianne joined the ESS Team in 2012 after twelve years in the staffing business, serving clients including Procter & Gamble, Amazon, Plastipak and Solo Cup. Lorianne has a passion for community service and has been involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Eastern Illinois Foodbank, and the Annual Job Fair for Champaign County. She was a licensed Foster Parent for 10 years and also has a shih-tzu and a malti-poo she loves to spoil. Lorianne has earned the designation of SHRM-SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional in HR) and PHR (Professional in Human Resources). She enjoys implementing new programs and technology at ESS that have a positive impact on the company and employees.

April Blair
April BlairBlooomington HR Coordinator
April joined ESS in January 2019 as the HR Coordinator for our Bloomington branch. She has 2 years of staffing experience and 6 years of recruiting experience, and earned her Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees from Illinois State University. After college, April and her husband stayed in Central IL where they live with their two dogs, cat, and tortoise. In her free time she trains Brazilian Jit Jitsu and relaxes at home with Netflix documentaries.

Nichole Broerman
Nichole BroermanOffice Manager
Nichole joined the ESS team in October of 2020 as Urbana’s Office Manager. She comes with a background in banking, recruiting and payroll. Nichole attended Parkland College specializing in accounting and loves all things to do with numbers and excel spreadsheets. She has strong administrative skills and loves to educate other employees on using progressive systems of technology and apps. Nichole grew up in Mahomet and recently ventured out to Fisher, IL. Nichole is inspired daily by her daughter, Peyton who is 9 years old. They love to travel and see family all over the United States but they equally enjoy time at home doing arts and crafts together. Nichole lives by the philosophy “one day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now.”

Kevin Copass
Kevin CopassBloomington Branch Manager
Kevin Copass joined the ESS Team in September, 2007, as Bloomington Branch Manager. He currently resides in Normal, IL with his wife of 30 years. Kevin has 25 years management experience ranging from food processing to distribution of children’s books and now as a BSC. Kevin and his wife Jodi were foster parents for 11 years. When he’s not working, Kevin enjoys biking and vegetable gardening. Kevin is certified as a Commercial Carpet Maintenance Technician thru the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC).

Kim De JesusCU HR Coordinator
Kim De Jesus joined the ESS team originally in September of 2013 with a short hiatus due to health and returned in March of 2017. Kim began as the Office Manager at the Urbana branch and then was promoted to Employment Manager. Kim is the first remote worker for ESS and started her remote working experience in 2018 with her current position being Human Resource Coordinator. She was born and raised in central Illinois and she now calls Homosassa, FL, home. Kim received her Bachelors of Art Degree in Christian Education and she has a passion to teach anyone she comes into contact with to rise above their current circumstances and become the best version of themselves. Kim is a hugger and if you ever meet her in person expect her to try and hug you! Kim is a grandmother to two beautiful granddaughters (Olivia and Ella) and one grandson (Meyer). Kim loves chocolate, coffee, books, long walks and sincere conversations. Kim’s super power: With the “don’t panic” mantra in mind, she finds efficient ways to always get the job done.
Sarah Dhom
Sarah Dhom Area Operations Manager
Sarah has been with ESS since November of 2014 and became a part-time Area Manager for the Effingham Branch in July, 2015. She came to ESS with previous management experience from the food and service industries. She lives in rural Jasper County with her husband Marc. She has 2 sons, Maeson and Maddox (Max), along with 2 stepchildren, Elianna and Fletcher. Sarah enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, taking care of her animals, and gardening.

Amy Eads
Amy EadsIndianapolis Area Manager
Amy joined the ESS Team in August, 2021 as an Area Manager for the Indianapolis Branch. She was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Amy has one, seven-year-old son, a stepdaughter, and two stepsons. She has been blessed with six grandbabies and she loves spending time with each of them. Her favorite colors are pick and black and her favorite food is spaghetti. She loves the beach with her favorite destination for travel being Florida.
Julianna Huck
Julianna HuckDirector of Employment
Julianna, who also goes by “Julie” joined the ESS Team in 2015 as Employment Manager. She has over twenty years of experience in Human Resources, and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Retail Merchandising with minors in Business Administration and Marketing. Julianna has lived in Arizona, California, Tennessee, Indiana and Illinois. She loves traveling, flower gardening, crafts, decorating, reading and movies. When she is not working, Julie likes to visit her three brothers and five nieces and nephews.

Billie Key
Billie KeyIndianapolis Branch Manager
Billie joined ESS Clean in November of 2018 as Area Operations Manager in our Indianapolis Branch and was promoted to Branch Manager in June of 2020. She has 13 years of experience in the industry including supervising contracts, operations and account management. Billie also has 8 years of experience in the medical field. She has her CCMA, CNA and Osha 30 certifications. Billie has 3 children and 1 very spoiled grandbaby. She loves spending time with her family as much as possible. Billie also enjoys refurbishing old furniture, hunting for antiques and playing pool in her free time.

Bobbie joined the ESS Team in March of 2021 after 17 years in transportation. She was an office assistant; dispatcher and she also drove a school bus with the same company for those 17 years. Bobbie has been married for 9 years and they have six children and one grandson. She likes bowling and spending time with family. She and her husband love to travel and experience different places and cultures.

Everyone calls me Joe. I started with ESS in August 2017 after spending 25 year’s in the food service industry. I was with Outback Steakhouse for 17 years, 7 years as kitchen manager and then 5 years at the Firefly Grill in Effingham as a sous chef. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, playing golf, and going to an Indianapolis Colts or Pacers game. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my daughter Emma and son Karsten.
Bob Monteith
Bob MonteithDecatur Branch Manager
After 15 years managing a hotel in Decatur, Bob joined the ESS Team in 2010. He is currently Branch Manager of Decatur. Bob has a B.S. in Hotel Management from Purdue University. He has been married since 2003 and has two stepchildren. Bob has been instrumental in a new project to feed the homeless in Decatur. When he is not working, volunteering or spending time with his family, Bob enjoys studying Astronomy and Genealogy.

Bob Odell joined the ESS Team in 2010 as Assistant Site Manager. He was promoted to Area Manager in 2011. Bob has spent a majority of his career in management, including twelve years in swine farm management, and ten years in manufacturing supervision. Born in Paxton, IL, Bob has lived in Illinois his entire life. He has been married to Christina for eighteen years and has two teen-age boys, Tyler and Chase. Bob enjoys spending time with family and his interests include American history, politics, gardening, Christian outreach and Chief Illiniwek.

Angie Pearman
Angie PearmanHR Admin/Social Media Coordinator
Angie joined the ESS team in August of 2021 as the HR Admin/Social Media Coordinator after 20 years in the Property Management business. Born in Oregon, and having lived in Arizona and Michigan, home for the last ten years has been St. Joseph, IL. Angie is married and has two teenagers that keep her busy with sports/band events. Also in the household is a spoiled cat and equally spoiled Bullmastiff (who outweighs almost everyone in the family!) Angie likes mustard on her French fries, loves her Chicago Cubs dearly, and dreams of having a house on the beach.

After receiving her Masters Degree in Education in 2004 from Southern Illinois University, Debra became a youth instructor. She joined the ESS Team in 2012 and was quickly promoted to Area Manager. In her free time, Debra enjoys reading, walking, dancing and spending time with family and freinds. Debra looks forward to providing the best quality of service to customers and support to the ESS Team.

Jacob Shaw

Jacob came to ESS Clean with fifteen years of experience in Purchasing and Marketing. Jacob grew up in in the Champaign/Urbana area, graduating from Centennial High School and earning a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois. Unfortunately, Jacob is a huge Buckeye fan! He enjoys hiking, camping, grilling, and of course, watching The Ohio State football and basketball teams. Jacob is married with two daughters who both play softball and piano (not at the same time). He was also named Rib Champion for 2017 in his neighborhood annual competition!

Paul Taylor
Paul TaylorCEO
Paul is founder of ESS Clean and serves as President and CEO. Paul has an Engineering degree from the U of I and has earned the designation of Certified Building Service Executive (CBSE) from the BSCAI, Green Cleaning Professional from ISSA, LEED Green Associate from the USGBC and is a Certified Workplace Trainer for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. Paul is President-elect for the Building Service Contractors Association International, a board member of Champaign County Habitat for Humanity and a member of Savoy Rotary. He also volunteers in the community as a mentor, a youth leader, and a facilitator for Financial Peace University. Paul likes to spend time with his wife, Andrea, daughters Grace, Olivia and Laura and his son-in-law, Jake. He also enjoys fishing, camping, skiing, running, biking, kayaking, swimming and hiking.

Peggy joined our team in 2014. Peggy has an accounting degree and has worked in the accounting field for 30 years which gives her the experience necessary for a variety of situations. Peggy and her husband of 27 years, Paul live in Farmer City. The Tobin’s have 2 grown children. When not working Peggy enjoys the beach, working in the yard and spending time with her family.

I was born in the Democrat Republic of Congo (Central Africa) and raised between Rome (Italy) and Paris (France). French is my first language but I can speak four more languages (dialects) including Swahili. I came in the United States in November 2011 with my family. I am married and I have 4 wonderful children (Jay 19, Kenayah 12, Anna Rosa 11, and Albertini 8). Beside my experience in administration management in Africa and Italy, I have 9 years of experience in hospitality in the US where I started as a laundry attendant then promoted as Director of housekeeping. I joined ESS Clean in May 2021. In the Congo, I had a degree in Network administration and database management. Here in the US I went to Heartland Community College where I graduated in 2019 in General Education. Now I am back to school at the Illinois State University pursuing a bachelor degree in Park and recreation Management. My passion for studying is to become a facility manager. I really don’t have free time but when I am not busy I enjoyed going out with my children to watch movies and watching them play. My favorite spots for vacation are Rome, Milan, Paris, and Madrid. My hobbies are traveling to New places. I love to play soccer.
Brian Vasquenz

Brian started working at ESS as an Area Manager in 2012. He was born in Baltimore (he’s an Orioles fan) and grew up in Bloomington. Although he has studied History and Human Biology, Brian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at Illinois State University and a Master of Divinity degree from ORU. He lives in an 1892 Victorian house, so Brian and his wife spend many weekends finishing projects in the house as well as their gardens. Brian is married with three children; his oldest is serving in the Marine Corps and two are still at home. When he’s not working on his house or at ESS, Brian enjoys time with his family, reading, cooking, hand sharpening knives, riding bicycles and cracking whips (no kidding!).

Marty Whalin
Marty WhalinSpecial Services Manager
Marty has been with ESS Clean since January of 2015 and in his current position of Area Manager since August of 2018. He spends his free time with his dog and his son, Henry. Marty’s hobbies include hunting, camping, canoeing, cycling… basically anything involving the outdoors and his dog.
